So you're interested in hunting! The Wild Game Species list is a great tool to learn about species available to hunt in the Okanagan. Regardless of what type of hunting you are interested in you will require a Possession Acquisition License to have a firearm and purchase ammunition.

Wild Game Species

Canada Goose / Cackling Goose

Canada Geese are large, long-necked waterfowl, with adults measuring 75–110 cm in length and weighing 3–6.5 kg. They have black heads and necks with a distinctive white chinstrap, brownish-gray bodies, and pale underparts. Juveniles are similar but duller in coloration. Their strong wingspan of 127–185 cm allows for long-distance migration.

Snow Goose

The Lesser Snow Geese has a white and blue color phase. The white phase goose is completely white, except for the wing tips. The blue phase has blackish blue feathers on the body. They may have rusty faces, from ground soil. Same as the white phase Lesser Snow Goose, Greater Snow Geese are completely white, except for the black wing tips. They are both almost the same. Wingspan of an adult Greater Snow Goose can be about 1.5 m. They can weigh up to 3.5kg. Lesser Snow Geese have a wingspan of about 90cm and weigh about 2.7kg, or more.

Dove: Mourning, Eurasian Collared

Adults are slender, medium-sized doves, measuring 26–34 cm in length, with a wingspan of 45–55 cm, and weighing 110–170 g. Plumage is soft gray-brown with black spots on wings, a long pointed tail with white edges, and pale underparts. Males and females are similar in appearance, though males often have a slightly brighter hue.

Pheasant

Adults are large, colorful game birds, with males measuring 50–90 cm in length, wingspans of 70–90 cm, and weighing 0.9–1.5 kg. Males are brightly colored with iridescent bronze, green, and gold feathers, a distinctive white neck ring, and red facial wattles. Females are smaller, dull brown with mottled patterns, providing camouflage while nesting.

White Fronted Goose

White-fronted Geese are medium-sized waterfowl, measuring 65–75 cm in length with a wingspan of 130–165 cm and weighing 2.3–3.5 kg. They have a gray-brown body with fine barring on the belly, a white facial patch at the base of the bill, and orange legs and bill. Juveniles are duller in color but otherwise similar to adults.

Ducks, Pintails, Canvasbacks, Goldeneye, Harlequin

Adults measure 50–65 cm in length, with a wingspan of 80–95 cm, and weigh 450–750 g. Males have long, pointed tail feathers, a chocolate-brown head, white neck stripe, and gray body, while females are mottled brown with a shorter tail.

Turkey

Wild Turkeys are large birds, with adults measuring 100–125 cm in length, wingspans of 125–155 cm, and weighing 4–11 kg, with males (toms) generally larger than females (hens). Males have iridescent bronze and copper plumage, a bare red head, a long beard (feathers protruding from the chest), and spurred legs. Females are smaller, duller in color, and lack a beard.

Gray (Hungarian) Partridge

Adults are small, stocky game birds, measuring 28–33 cm in length with a wingspan of 45–50 cm and weighing 300–450 g. They have gray-brown bodies, rufous flanks, a small crest on the head, and a distinctive black “horse-shoe” marking on the belly. Females are slightly duller and smaller than males.

Ross's Goose

Ross’s Geese are small white geese, measuring 56–66 cm in length with a wingspan of 115–135 cm and weighing 1.4–2.5 kg. They have bright white plumage with black wingtips, a short stubby pink bill with a distinctive black “grin patch”, and pink legs and feet. Juveniles are duller with less defined markings but otherwise similar in shape.

Coots, Common Snipe

Adults are medium-sized waterbirds, measuring 36–41 cm with a wingspan of 58–71 cm, and weighing 400–600 g. They have dark gray to black bodies, white bills, red eyes, and greenish legs with lobed toes for swimming. Juveniles are duller with brownish plumage.

Quail

Adults are small, plump birds, measuring 23–28 cm in length with a wingspan of 30–35 cm, and weighing 150–220 g. They have grayish-brown bodies, scaled pattern on the chest, a distinctive forward-curving black plume on the head, and white facial markings. Males have more vivid coloration and a darker plume, while females are duller with a smaller plume.

Chukar Partridge

Adults are medium-sized, stocky birds, measuring 32–35 cm in length with a wingspan of 50–60 cm and weighing 400–550 g. They have light brown to sandy bodies, grayish underparts, bold black-and-white facial stripes, red legs, and a short red bill. Females are slightly duller with less distinct facial markings.
