Gopher Snake

The Gopher Snake is the largest snake species in British Columbia and is found primarily in the southern interior, including the Okanagan, Thompson, Similkameen, and Fraser River valleys. In BC, it occurs at the northern edge of its range and is considered at risk, listed as Threatened federally and Blue-listed provincially. Populations are declining mainly due to habitat loss, road mortality, and persecution from being mistaken for rattlesnakes.

Gopher Snake

Gopher Snakes are large, muscular, non-venomous snakes that can grow up to 2.5 m (8 ft) long, though most are shorter. They are yellowish, tan, or cream-coloured with dark brown or black blotches along the back and sides. Their heads are narrow with large eyes, and they have keeled scales that give them a rough appearance. When threatened, they may flatten their heads, hiss loudly, vibrate their tails, and coil defensively, mimicking rattlesnake behaviour.
